Onion is considered to be one of the oldest vegetables having medicinal properties. According to an old saying written in cuneiform, carved in stone "Whoever eats onion in autumn, shall not get stomach ache in winter!" There are some data that red onion was grown in Mesopotamia and Egypt 6000 years ago. No other plant was as common motif on Egyptian tomb paintings as onion was. Onion was considered to be a holy plant, and thus forbidden food in many parts of the world. According to some authors, the homeland of onion covers the area of Middle Asia, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Iran. It was brought to Europe in the Middle Ages through Italian trade. It became popular very early in England as well, in a famous combination - bread, cheese and onion. The sweetest variety of onion is grown in Spain and Macedonia.
